Granerudsjøen Milepel

2024

Proposal sketch commissioned by Innlandet Fylkeskommune for the art project "Tankeplass2", consisting of several artworks placed along the Pilgrim route from Oslo to Trondheim.

The Granerudsjøen Milestone is a multi-part art project that begins with a large milestone placed by Granerudsjøen. The work extends northward along the pilgrimage route in the form of seven waymarks, each representing an old Norwegian unit of length used before the metric system was introduced. These units – stone’s throw, arrow shot, fjerdingvei (quarter mile), landmil (old mile), halt, rowing shift, and day’s journey – were based on the human body and physical capacity, much like other pre-metric units. By positioning these waymarks along the route, hikers can physically experience these traditional measures while learning about history, culture, and structure.
