Secret Support

2019
Seven powder coated aluminum sculptures
Sizes up to 40x30x120xcm cm

Secret Support explores one of the technological abstractions of the 3D printing industry. The sculptures appropriate the form of plastic structures that are automatically generated by a proprietary algorithm to support a 3D model while printing on a resin 3D printer. The work is part of the PhD-project Unmaking Abstractions which explores how mathematical, geometric and algorithmic abstractions shape things made with 3D modeling technology.

Secret Support builds on the works Riegelbau and Terra Nullius, addressing the relationship between technological development, the formal language of support structures, and the craft and labor involved in creating them.

Documentation of the PhD project is available on Research Catalogue.
